The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California hosted its 17th annual Solar Cup competition at Lake Skinner in Temecula on the weekend of May 17, 2019. Over 750 high school students from all over Southern California participated in the three-day competition. Rancho Cucamonga’s very own Los Osos High School (LOHS) was a veteran participant amongst 39 competing high schools. The LOHS Grizzlies were sponsored by the Cucamonga Valley Water District and the Inland Empire Utilities Agency.

Solar Cup is the nation’s largest solar-powered boating competition which teaches high school students how to apply their skills in engineering, science, math, team building, problem-solving and resource conservation. Over the last eight months, the LOHS Grizzlies attended boat-building and technical workshops, completed a Public Service Message, completed two technical reports and built their 16-foot, single-seat boat powered only by the sun. This year, LOHS received high honors in the competition and brought home four 1st Place regional trophies for the following categories: Public Service Message, Technical Reports, Endurance Race, and Sprint Race. The Grizzlies achieved a remarkable 6th place overall at the Solar Cup competition.

“The Los Osos Grizzlies are a true representation of hard work and dedication," stated CVWD Board Director Randall Reed. “These students demonstrated a commitment to excellence with a ‘don’t quit’ attitude despite the challenges they faced on the water. CVWD is very proud to sponsor this team and recognize their commitment and innovation.”

Each year, CVWD sponsors one high school team in the Solar Cup competition. Together with IEUA, CVWD supports the team in its planning and preparation for the competition. This experience helps prepare students for the hands-on projects and group assignments they can look forward to in college and in their future careers. This is the seventh year the Los Osos High School team has competed in Solar Cup.

“Our team is very fortunate to have great support from our sponsoring agencies with onsite mentorship, knowledge and expertise,” commented Kathleen Diver, the LOHS team advisor. “Our team had a rocky start for the actual competition, and we made minor adjustments. The students did a great job on the endurance events, and the learning and communication in our team was evident. Claws up!”

The 2019 LOHS team includes Monica Burger, Shelton Chieu, Tyler Congrove, Chloe DeNuto, Gean Hu, Kevin Jang, Hector Lugo, Ronit Nath, Gunjan Sharma, Michael Shih, Kaiway Tang, Kevin Tang, Sarah Taylor, Parth Ugavekar, and Pranav Ugavekar; teacher advisors were Kathleen Diver and Fred Diver.
